It's 11:15 am and you have a son! Those were probably the first words you heard...
Two Daughters, and now a son. A parents dream!
Childhood: Text
You were cherished by both your parents and your sisters from the moment you arrived! It’s an understatement (and politically incorrect) to say that you were a real boy. But you were! So different from your sisters – energy just radiating off you, all motion and movement, competitive in everything you did, sports, sports and more sports, and a gentlemanly view of honour and your role in the world.

But as a child, you were a great deal more complex than the stereotypical boy. You were full of passion, sensitivity and emotion. If you liked something, you really loved it. On a scale of 1 to 10 you’d score the things you loved a 12! And if you were upset by something, you were really upset, even inconsolable! And you had a tremendous amount of compassion for anyone or anything that was hurt or less fortunate than yourself, always the first to be by their side, figuring out how you could help.

You were blessed to be amazing at whatever you set your mind to. Everything came easy. There was nothing you ever thought you couldn’t do. You barely glanced at homework and still achieved straight “A” s. You took a couple of art lessons and received awards for your work, you took to banging on the drums and became an All State Drummer, you taught yourself guitar and were one of the very best we’ve ever seen, you jumped in a sailboat and quickly won races, you played a little golf and before long were giving your Dad (who has played his whole live) tips to improve, and you skied with great confidence and poise.

You were incredibly charismatic. You had a presence about you that made people take notice. You had a wonderful sense of humour, were a practical joker and someone who could laugh at yourself. You were outgoing and always had lots of friends around you. You were also a leader that liked to set the direction and encourage those around you. It didn’t come as a surprise that you were elected to the Student Council.

You were a really smart kid, with a curious mind always looking to better understand things that even adults had a hard time understanding. You saw two sides to every issue and could argue for whatever point of view or perspective you might have had. If we said something was white, you’d have ten reasons why it was black. You didn’t appreciate rules and if you found any kind of loophole in what was said, you’d find it. We always said you should have been a lawyer!

You loved adventure. You gravitated to adventure stories as a small child, and with a creative mind you somehow found yourself in those adventures. You loved sword fighting. You were drawn to war stories and loved to play army with Christian, sneaking up on neighbours in your ghillie suits. You loved the idea of camping out, putting the tent up in the backyard on occasion, and sailing up to Croton Point for the annual overnighter. My Side of the Mountain was one of your favorite books.

And perhaps one of the most intriguing things about you as a child was your mystical, sometimes magical spirit and presence. Like when you rolled the number “6” more than 20 times in a row in a game of Trouble to somehow come from behind and win. You often knew things that were unknowable. Like when we agreed to meet your uncle Paul and camp at an undetermined halfway point between Boston and Toronto to trade your sister Hannah with your cousin Steven. For several weeks, as we were preparing your sister for her trip to Boston, you were preparing for your trip to “Mexico” – how cute we thought. That is until we ran a string along a road map from Toronto to Boston, then halved the string and ran it along the map to determine a halfway point that somehow turned out to be a little town called “Mexico”!
