This is perhaps the most difficult part of your journey for us to write. Oh sure, we knew who your friends were when you were a child, but as you grew up that became less and less the case. Regardless, there are a few things about friends and friendship that we want to acknowledge

Friendship came easy to you – you were outgoing and always willing to share a smile, get into a discussion, and take an interest in others. And although making friends was easy, true friendship was an important and deeply personal thing. You were fiercely loyal and asked for that loyalty to be returned. You put your friends above pretty much everything else. And with your friends you would share your adventures, share your sense of humour and share your world completely.

Growing up you had lots of friends, but your best friend who you pretty much did everything with was Christian. You guys were inseparable – whether it was school, sports, or just hanging out.

Of course, there were many other good friends all around you (Scott, Ryan), and all the other local, school based friends.

Or the friends you made through all the extracurricular activities, especially sailing, where your summers were spent adventuring on the Hudson River with great friends you’d see year after year. And music, where you connected with lots of people who weren’t in your direct circles.

And then there were the friends you made through family, friends of your parents, friends of your sisters – they were all friends to you.

Over the last few years it was hard to know who your friends were. And it was even harder to find any photos of you with those friends. And although we know you did have many friends in and around Nanaimo and Vancouver, we thought a couple really stood out – Dave was a friend you could turn to for help, and Gareld was a friend you stayed close with over tumultuous times for both of you.

I think it’s fair to say Rhys that you made a huge difference in a lot of people’s lives!
